Tommy Sheridan has launched a bid to replace former Commons Speaker Michael Martin as MP for Glasgow North-East.
The Solidarity Party leader has vowed to fight against MPs' expenses if he is successful in the upcoming by-election.
As an MSP, Mr Sheridan campaigned against the second home allowance enjoyed by politicians.
Mr Sheridan said he would also address the wider issues of unemployment and recession.
A meeting of Solidarity supporters voted to adopt Mr Sheridan as their prospective candidate earlier this week.
He will officially put his name forward in September to stand in the by-election which is expected to be held in November.
Earlier this week, Labour selected law lecturer William Bain, 36, as their candidate.
