From the Guide & Gazette 1 st September 2008

The SNP claimed new polling analysis sees it on course to pick up more than 30 seats at Westminster.

The Scottish Parliament reconvenes this week with the Nationalists claiming a "summer of success" after victory in the Glasgow East by-election, overturning a Labour majority of 13,000.

And an analysis of Scottish samples of all UK opinion polls in August indicates its support has reached 38% - 11% up on Labour.

The Tories are on 19%, with the Lib Dems on 13%.

The Nationalists say this would see them gain 32 new seats, with Labour losing 31, the Tories gaining three, and the Lib Dems losing four.

An SNP spokesman said: "After a fantastic summer of success, the SNP approach the new political year full of vim - and in fine fettle for the Fife by-election, with a solid 11 point lead over Labour for a Westminster election."

A by-election is looming in the Fife constituency of Glenrothes after the recent death of sitting Labour MP John MacDougall.

The Scottish breakdowns come from a series of UK Gov and ComRes polls published in various national newspapers from the end of July to August, with a sample of more than 1,000 over the six.

A YouGov poll commissioned by the SNP at the beginning of August put the SNP lead over Labour at 7%, with the Tories on 18% and Lib Dems on 13%.
