Head teacher to fight by-election for Labour

From STV News 2 nd September 2008

A headteacher from Gordon Brown's old school will fight the Glenrothes by-election for Labour. Fifty-nine-year-old Lindsay Roy is rector at Kirkcaldy High School.

Labour is defending a majority of 10,664 for the seat which was left vacant following the death of John MacDougall.

A date for the by-election has still to be announced, but it comes after the SNP's sensational by-election victory in Glasgow East where Labour lost what should have been a safe seat.ÊIn 2006 Labour suffered a humiliation in another constituency on Mr Brown's home turf when the Liberal Democrats captured Dunfermline and West Fife from Labour.

Mr Roy became rector at Mr Brown's old school, Kirkcaldy High School in Fife, earlier this year. Before that he was rector of Inverkeithing High School, also in Fife.

After he was selected last night, Mr Roy said: "I am delighted and honoured to be selected to fight this seat.

"I will work hard for every vote because I have seen myself the huge difference that Labour has made to our communities in Fife."

A Labour Party spokesman said: "Lindsay Roy is an outstanding Fife headteacher and will be an outstanding Fife MP.

"He has inspired generations of young Fifers and is regarded as one of the best school leaders in Scotland. Even the SNP have praised his qualities. He will be a brilliant, authentic voice for Fife."

The SNP has chosen Peter Grant, the leader of Fife Council, as its candidate. The Liberal Democrats have selected Harry Wills, a former chief executive of several local companies, and the Conservatives have picked former student leader Maurice Golden.
