FORMER First Minister Henry McLeish has backed Lindsay Roy to win the vital Glenrothes by-election for Labour.
McLeish claimed Roy - the head teacher at PM Gordon Brown's former school - was an "exceptional candidate and one of the best Labour have put forward in a very long time".
He added: "I believe Lindsay Roy can win the seat. He will attract a lot of support from other parties.
"He is a man who will deliver for Glenrothes.
"He will be unashamedly Scottish and uncompromisingly Scottish and will take no nonsense from anyone.
"He is the right man at the right time to raise morale in the seat. For too long, Labour have had a defeatist attitude and I think this hugely enhances the prospects of Labour retaining the seat."
McLeish added that Roy, rector at Kirkcaldy High, was "a breath of fresh air" and came into the by-election without any political baggage.
But SNP MSP Tricia Marwick claimed Labour's selection showed Brown was "pulling the strings".
And she claimed: "Instead of coming to the Glenrothes by-election himself, the Prime Minister is sending a fall guy instead."
