The SNP will demonstrate their readiness for the by-election in Glenrothes by naming their candidate today.
The party's national executive met on Wednesday night and agreed to press ahead with their selection process in the Fife new town tonight, where the party leader on Fife Council, Peter Grant, is expected to be be picked for the high-profile fight.
Councillor Grant was adopted as General Election candidate for Glenrothes but under SNP procedures there must be a separate procedure for a by-election. The SNP hierarchy met this week to accelerate this process, and it is expected that this process is expected to be confirmed tonight when he is confirmed as candidate.
A party spokesperson said: "The national executive committee met last night to agree our selection timetable for the Glenrothes by-election.
"Given the ongoing uncertainty over the date of the by-election, the committee agreed our selection process must go forward with a view that the earliest possible date should be prepared for. Therefore a selection meeting of all members in the constituency has been called for Friday evening."
Labour has yet to decide on a date for the election, or to identify a timetable for its own selection process, in which local councillors Mark Hood and Kay Morrison are seen as front-runners.
