SNP icon Margaret Ewing dies at 60

By Robbie Dinwoodie, Chief Scottish Political Correspondent in the Herald 22 nd March 2006

Margaret Ewing, the MSP for Moray, yesterday died at her home in the constituency she served at Westminster and Holyrood for almost 20 years.

The SNP stalwart was first elected to Westminster as Margaret Bain in 1974 and later married into the Nationalist dynasty headed by Winnie Ewing.

She fought battles with breast cancer in 2002 and pneumonia the following year, and had announced she was standing down as an MSP next year.

Tributes flowed from across the political spectrum for the 60-year-old MSP, as her husband, Fergus Ewing, who represents the neighbouring constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber, travelled back to their family home in Lossiemouth from the Scottish parliament.

She was the youngest MP when she won East Dunbartonshire in 1974, and went on to be SNP group leader both at Westminster and Holyrood. Up until this month she was actively involved in the efforts to forge links between Scotland and Malawi.
