Richard Lochhead has launched his campaign to succeed fellow Nationalist Margaret Ewing as MSP for Moray and insisted he was not taking any vote for granted.
The by-election was prompted by Mrs Ewing's death last month, at the age of 60, following a long illness.
Mr Lochhead, who hopes to retain the Holyrood seat for the SNP, is to resign as a regional list MSP for North East Scotland in order to contest the by-election. He had already been selected by local members to contest Moray in the main Scottish Parliament election next year.
