![]() | 'The local council (Perth & Kinross) is an even bigger problem for the two challengers to the SNP. Boundary changes pushed up the number of wards two years ago. The SNP took 16 seats but the rest - Tories (11), Labour (six), Liberals (six), and independents (two) - formed an anti-nationalist coalition. The administration increased council tax increases, cut services and slid down the Accounts Commission's annual efficiency league table from third to 10th place.' Peter, who has lived in Perthshire all his life, was born in Ninewells Hospital and went to Coupar Angus Primary and Strathallan School, Perth. After school Peter attended the Scottish Agricultural College in Edinburgh.
During his time at college, Peter, along with other students, set up charitable events which have now become a long running fixture in the capital city's calendar. One event is the FARM Africa Ball, which is held each year to help raise money to buy tools for African farmers.
Peter's work involves him travelling all over the UK managing the expansion of a UK wide recycling firm but he is based at the family farm in Coupar Angus.
Peter has previously stood for the Scottish Parliament in 2007 in Dunfermline West where he increased the Conservative vote after his campaigns to reach out to all corners of the community.
Commenting on his selection, Peter said: "It is an honour to have been chosen as the Scottish Conservative Westminster Candidate for Perth & North Perthshire. I am delighted that I have been given the chance to fight really hard for the people that I have grown up around and for the area that I have grown up in.
"I hope to use the time from now until the general election to meet as many people in Perth and North Perthshire as possible. I hope that when people meet me they will see me for what I really am - just a local person trying to make our local area a better place for everyone to live in.
"Perth has not really been taking the strides forward that it should have over the past decade. It is a great city but at night there are real fears of crime and disorder at night and it lacks the transport and community links to Edinburgh and Glasgow that will really allow it and the local businesses to grow as they deserve.
"It is a privilege to be selected to fight for Perth & North Perthshire. This is one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland and the United Kingdom, and I will stand up for our area at every opportunity and fight for a better deal for Perth & North Perthshire."
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser welcomed Peter's selection as the Conservative candidate. He said:
"I congratulate Peter Lyburn on being selected as the Conservative Westminster Candidate for Perth and North Perthshire.
"I have known Peter for a number of years and I know that he will work extremely hard for the local area and for every constituent. Peter is an able young man from a local family that has deep roots in the constituency. Peter will make an excellent MP for the people of Perth and North Perthshire." Peter Lyburn is a member of the Tuesday Club, a Tory 'think tank' and also plays football and golf. In January 2007, on the day David Cameron visited Scotland, Peter Lyburn attacked the leadership of Annabel Goldie, telling BBC Good Morning Scotland: "I'm not being overly controversial in stating that what the party needs is a rejuvenation in leadership." and added: "Not necessarily somebody younger - somebody with a slightly more youthful attitude towards politics." Douglas Taylor lives in Perth with his wife, Amelia, and their two year old daughter, Ruth. Born in Edinburgh, his childhood was spent in Malawi, where his parents were Church of Scotland missionaries. An accountant by profession, and educated at the University of Aberdeen, Douglas has worked in the City of London and Scottish financial sectors. As well as travel, Douglas enjoys skiing, football and hill-walking. He was the Conservative candidate in Perth and North Perthshire in the 2005 general election, and stood in 2001 as a Tory in the Western Isles. A traditionalist, unionist, free market, Eurosceptic, Douglas is deeply concerned by the lack of integrity in the political system which the expenses scandal has exposed. Douglas Taylor came within 1,521 votes of winning Perth & North Perthshire in 2005. However, he claims that a selection process dominated by English Tories secured the nomination this time for candidate Peter Lyburn instead of himself. The Press & Journal reported that ' in the letter Mr Taylor stated: 'The candidate selection process in Scotland and the UK as a whole has been biased against experienced candidates.' He said a 'loss of integrity in some of the internal procedures makes it very difficult for honest candidates to proceed on merit'. The Trust Party is sponsored by successful spread-betting speculator and Eurosceptic Stuart Wheeler Ð who donated £5million to the Tories in 2001. It is fielding two candidates in the UK, with Stuart Wheeler himself standing in Bexhill & Battle. Recent electoral experience As a Conservative & Unionist candidate: 2005 Westminster Parliament election, Perth & North Perthshire, 13,948 votes (30.37 %) 2004 European Parliament election, Seventh on national Conservative & Unionist list, 209,028 votes (17.76 %) 2001 Westminster Parliament election, Western Isles, 1,250 votes (9.50 %) 1997 Westminster Parliament election, Kilmarnock & Loudoun, 5,125 votes (10.81 %) | ||
