| Rev.Dr.Sheila McLaughlan, was an adopted child, her mother came from Beridale Braes in the far North.
A mother of five children, Sheila and her husband Paul also raised thirty other children. Some were fostered, others were just brought to them. Many of them stayed with them until they got married. Sheila is greatly concerned about the issue of fostering and adopting children to same sex couples. Sheila says "I know the trauma of adoption which I saw in some children who were adopted into the family which I was with."
" Although they had excellent parents some had problems throughout their lives feeling they had been rejected by their biological parents." Imagine what it would be like to find oneself in a same sex parent situation. Being teased at school, the butt of many remarks, even a victim of bullying. Thirty years ago at a meeting in Stirling this debate came up in a public gathering. Sheila spoke up then pointing out that that the adopted child has rights. She challenged the audience, "If you were ill and needed your children in care for a few weeks, how would you feel about them staying with a same sex couple?" As a result of this challenge a lot of voices, which had been previously silent, spoke out for these children. If people choose to live in same sex relationships then they will be answerable for their own lives, but we do not need to risk children being injured emotionally or otherwise just because they are not our children.
