The Scottish Government

saltire shield'The escalating row over compensation for Scottish fishermen has claimed its first political casualty. Tavish Scott, deputy parliament minister and Liberal Democrat MSP, resigned from the Scottish Executive in protest over its decision to push ahead with long-term aid for the industry despite being defeated in the Scottish Parliament. In a letter to his party leader Jim Wallace, the Shetland MSP said his position as a minister in the Lib Dem/Labour coalition executive had become "untenable".'

On the 8 th of March 2001 the Scottish Executive suffered its first ever defeat in the Scottish Parliament over their policy of refusing to compensate fishermen for a forced tie-up. MSPs voted for an amendment to make short term payments. However, Fisheries Minister Rhona Brankin refused to accept Parliament's decision and claimed 'The Executive is make a decison on how to proceed. We think it right to stick to the principles we stated earlier.'
On the 10 th March 2001, Tavish Scott, who had voted in favour of the Executive's fishing policy two days earlier, resigned as Deputy Minister for Parliament in protest at the Executive's refusal to heed Parliament. Euan Robson was appointed Deputy Minister for Parliament in his place.
